After an approximate 45 mintue drive through the beautiful French scenery, we arrive in Pezenas, a charming little town built on a plain covered with vineyards. Pezenas was the residence of the governors of Languedoc and it became the ‘Versailles’, or royal court, of the region.

In the old city we will admire the mansions with elegant balconies and ornate doorways and the narrow streets unchanged since the 17th century. Back onboard our coach we will drive to Valmagne Abbey. Constructed in 1138, the splendid Benedictine abbey later belonged to the Cistercian order but was sacked during the wars of religion and finally abandoned during the French Revolution. Now it has acquired a notable reputation for winemaking. The building has a Gothic abbey church, a chapter house and a fountain, and is located in the parish of Villeveyrac, close to Meze and not far from the Etang de Thau. Inside Valmagne Abbey we have the opportunity to walk around the Cloister Garden. The magnificent nave of the church is now one of the region’s largest wine cellars. The enormous wooden tanks contain the red and white ‘AOC Coteaux de Languedoc’ wines which are aged here. We will have the opportunity to do some wine tasting.
There is approximately 2 hours of walking involved – 1 hour at Pezenas, and 1 hour at Vlamagne Abbey, it is likely that steps will be encountered. We do not recommend this tour for passengers with wheelchairs.
