TORSHAVN, FAROE ISLANDS
We board our coach on the quayside opposite historic Tinganes, the rocky peninsula in Tórshavn harbour where the ancient Vikings first established the town. We board our coach on the quayside opposite historic Tinganes, the rocky peninsula in Tórshavn harbour where the ancient Vikings first established the town. Travelling up to the scenic ridge top road that runs along the southern part of the island of Streymoy, we pause for photos at a viewpoint overlooking the colourful capital city. In the green sheep pastures above Tórshavn we should look out for stone cairns which marked the footpaths between villages in olden days. Above Norðradalur (North Valley), we stop again for photos. On clear days, a dramatic view of the island of Koltur will pan out before us. Further north, views of the fjords of Kaldbak and Kollafjørður open up below. Winding down into a valley, we pass a charming mountain tarn and pause to admire Lake Leynar. Arriving in Leynar we will have a stop of almost one hour. Here we may visit the local woodturner and watch him work, or we may have a walk on the shores of the beach, which is situated next to the house. Passing colourful villages, as we journey back towards Tórshavn, we then drive through a three kilometre (one and a half mile) long tunnel and along a fjord at sea level, where we may spot salmon jumping in farms near the shore. This tour is particularly suitable for those passengers with limited mobility, although there is a little walking at the viewpoints (20-30 metres/65-100 feet) and at passengers’ discretion at Leynar. It should be noted that there are 12 steps to see the woodcarver (optional visit). Passengers may remain on the coach at the viewpoints if they prefer. Weather permitting, some wonderful views will be enjoyed.
