BILBAO, SPAIN
Our sightseeing drive will open up our eyes to the contrasts of the city – the juxtaposition of old and new.
Departing the quayside, we drive along the main avenues of Bilbao, where we can admire the beautiful Ensanche area, including the Albia Gardens, San Nicolás Church and the surrounding Alamedas (boulevards). Our sightseeing drive will open our eyes up to the contrasts of the city – the juxtaposition of old and new. We shall see the old 19th century bridges over the Nervión River and also more modern monuments, designed by the most innovative new architects.
The biggest surprise in Bilbao is the Guggenheim Museum – an incredible construction, which contains an impressive array of modern art. Designed by architect Frank O’Gehry, the Museum is 24,000 square metres (258,000 square feet) in size, covered by more than 35,000 unique titanium tiles, and has an impressive 50-metre (165 feet) high glass hall. The building, which was first opened to the public in 1997, has been considered the greatest architectural expression at the end of the 20th century.
Upon arrival at the Museum, we can admire the work of modern artists, from the likes of Picasso, Chagall, Kandinsky and Matisse (subject to change). At the end of our interesting visit, we can enjoy some free time to browse around the Museum shop, before re-boarding our tour coach and heading back to our awaiting ship.
TOUR NOTES: This tour involves a total of approximately one and a half hours of walking. There are some steps to negotiate at the Museum, however a lift is available. The itinerary of this tour may vary due to traffic conditions. Please note that 15th to 24th August 2010 is Aste Nagusia in Bilbao – ‘fiesta week’ – therefore the city is likely to be very busy, and heavy traffic is likely.
