We shall revel in the abundant birdlife and lush rainforest, and feel at one with the people and spirit of Lamington National Park. We will travel through the lush countryside via Canungra to the World Heritage area of Lamington National Park. Covering 20,000 hectares, the park is made up of varying virgin forest – from the temperate beech forest high on the border ranges, the warm sub-tropical rainforest which surrounds O’Reilly’s Guesthouse, to the dry eucalyptus forest in the lower valleys. We shall spend our day among the rainforest at O’Reilly’s Guesthouse – an internationally renowned eco-tourism retreat. We can delight in hand feeding the colourful king parrots and crimson rosellas. We will also take a nature walk along the Tree Top Walkway with a local guide. The Walkway, which is 180 metres in length, is made up of nine suspension bridges, and allows us to wander through the canopy to see flowering and fruiting trees and vines and ferns. The National Park provides food and shelter for Australia’s largest array of sub-tropical birdlife, and many reptiles and mammals. Spectacular views, rugged mountain ranges and cascading waterfalls are all part of the area. Following a BBQ lunch and refreshments, we shall have some free time to embark upon another walk, visit the craft shop or just enjoy the rainforest surroundings before returning to the ship via the Canungra Valley.
This tour is not suitable for wheelchair passengers. A moderate amount of activity is involved. A certain degree of mobility is also required as the Tree Top Walkway (accessed by a ladder) is approximately 180 metres (590 feet) long, and comprises 9 suspension bridges up to 15 metres (50 feet) off the ground. There are two observation decks, the highest 30 metres (100 feet) off the ground, which is accessed by ladder. The start of the walkway is approximately 300 metres (1,000 feet) from the Guesthouse. We recommend that you wear comfortable walking shoes. Some rough ground will be encountered. Do not forget your sun protection and bring insect repellent. A barbecue lunch is included (with soft drinks, tea and coffee – beer and wine will be available to purchase). Driving time to O’Reilly’s Guesthouse is approximately 3 hours each way (around 1½ hours of which will be on the Pacific Motorway). You may wish to bring a bottle of water for the journey.
