Become acquainted with Odessa, one of Ukraine’s most prosperous and cosmopolitan cities. Our tour begins with a view of the impressive Potemkin Staircase, which descends dramatically 135 metres (445 feet) to Primorsky Boulevard – a beautiful wide seafront promenade and the city’s most cherished monument to the Duke de Richelieu. We then walk to the magnificent Opera House, where we will admire its splendid Exterior. One of the best in Europe, completed in 1887, the baroque-style building resembles the Vienna Opera House and Dresden Court Theatre, and was designed by the same architects. Continuing, a visit is made to the Uspensky Cathedral, the main church of Odessa and Kherson Diocese. This five-domed cathedral was built between 1855 and 1869, and is a grand structure with a Byzantine-style façade. From Uspensky Cathedral we will drive past some of Odessa’s most appealing architecture, before stopping at Shevchenko Park. With 225 acres of green space and pleasant views of the sea, the park also has an obelisk with an eternal flame burning in commemoration of the unknown sailor. We proceed to the Museum of Fine Arts, housed in a former Palace of Count Pototsky, with an impressive display of Russian and Ukrainian icons and paintings dating back to the 15th century. From here we return to our ship. Please note that there is a moderate amount of walking involved in this tour, with approximately 25 steps to encounter. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended. Appropriate conservative dress should be worn. The order of sites visited may vary. The visit to the Opera House is an outside visit only.
