MONTEGO BAY, JAMAICA

Travelling through Jamaica’s beautiful countryside, we will pass through historic sites and villages before arriving into the town of Ocho Rios, a former fishing port that was also known for its banana exports.

Now it is a pretty resort town with stunning waterfalls, beaches and interesting colonial-period buildings, including the Geddes Memorial Church and the Anglican Church. The name ‘Ocho Rios’ has two possible origins; a direct translation from Spanish is ‘Eight Rivers’ or ‘Las Chorreras’ which means spouts and reflects the large number of waterfalls in the area.

Our tour will travel through the city and Oracabessa to Firefly, the resting-place and former home of the British playwright Noel Coward. Upon our arrival, we will be greeted by a guide who will take us back in time to the Noel Coward epoch. We will be invited to see what inspired him to compose his famous plays! With more than 60 produced plays to his credit, Noel Coward was the acknowledged master of the English stage during the first half of the 20th century. At one point in the late 20’s he had four plays running simultaneously in London’s West End.

As a professional man of theatre, his first job, as he saw it was to win over audiences, which he did by making them laugh. Most critics agree that his finest achievements as a writers were five comedies – Hay Fever, Private Lives, Design for Living, Blithe Spirit and Present Laughter.

Departing Firefly, we will return to the town of Ocho Rios, where we will be invited to enjoy a Jamaican buffet lunch before our final stop at Dunn’s River Falls. At the falls the water cascades 600 feet over giant staircase rocks into the Caribbean Sea. Those feeling adventurous can make the climb up the waterfall, whilst others can view the waterfall from the balconies along the cataract.

TOUR NOTES: Please note that we will spend approximately 70 minutes at Noel Cowards Firefly, where passengers will be required to stand and/or walk for the entire duration. There will also be approximately 23 steps to negotiate. Please be warned that it is both strenuous and slippery to climb the Dunn’s River Falls, but nevertheless it is a worthwhile and exhilarating experience. If you are wishing to climb the falls, you will require a towel and don’t forget to come already wearing your swimwear; please also ensure you have adequate sun protection and shoes that you do not mind getting wet. The climb will involve negotiating 200 steps. There will be an open bar accompanying lunch which will also serve beer and wine, however we do not recommend passengers drink alcoholic beverages if they intend to climb the falls after lunch.
