ISLA MARGARITA, VENEZUELA
On water and land, we will discover the natural wonders of Margarita.
This tour begins with a drive to the landing stage of the Restinga National Park. Here we will board small boats (‘peneros’) for a short cruise among the mangrove forest that grows within the lagoon. Under the canopy of trees there is an opportunity to get close to the flora and fauna of this precious ecosystem. After visiting this unique forest in the water, we continue to the Museo Marino, where samples of the marine life of the Caribbean are shown. Then we continue on to the Tropical Labyrinth – a fascinating garden with a ficus maze and multiple species of plants arranged in attractive patterns. Refreshments are served along with samples of seasonal fruit. We make a brief shopping stop in La Aldea before beginning the return journey to our ship.
TOUR NOTES: This tour involves a moderate amount of walking: approximately 20 metres (65 feet) at La Restinga Lagoon (and 3 steps); 50 metres (165 feet) at the Tropical Labyrinth over uneven ground (plus 5 steps); and 20 metres (65 feet) in La Aldea over uneven ground. Participating passengers should be able to get into and out of the small boats at the lagoon (boarded from a pier). For reference the boat drivers do not speak English – our English-speaking guide will brief us before our cruise around the mangrove. US Dollars are accepted when shopping at La Aldea. On sale you may find rum, coffee, pearls, hand-made dolls and hammocks. Water is supplied on the coach. All passengers are strongly advised to wear their life jackets throughout the entire boat trip.
