KATAKOLON, CRETE

North of the port of Katakolon, in the idyllic countryside between the Ionian Sea and the mountain of Katakolo, lies the village of Korakkochori and the stone mansion, lovely vineyards and winery of the Mercouri family.

North of the port of Katakolon, in the idyllic countryside between the Ionian Sea and the mountain of Katakolo, lies the village of Korakkochori and the stone mansion, lovely vineyards and winery of the Mercouri family. Established in 1860 by Theodore Mercouri, who was the first to import Refosco grapes from Italy, this farm and estate functioned as a winery and distillery until 1955. The operation was revived in 1990 by the founders granddaughter, Maria Mercouri and her sons; established a new agrarian renovation programme and modernised the winery with the latest technology. Our visit includes a walk through the woods, along the beach and in the vineyards; then a guided explanation about Cava. Three wines of Ktima Mercouri can be tasted, as we experience the beauty and charm of the private estate of one of Greece’s most highly respected vintners. Most of this visit is on foot, so please wear comfortable non-slip shoes.
