PHILIPSBURG, ST MAARTEN

Departing from Philipsburg, we will travel along the Great Salt Pond and through Sucker Garden where we shall pass by the monument that marks the Dutch/French border. Our coach will then continue on through the French Quartier D’Orleans, before arriving at the butterfly farm.

Upon our arrival at the butterfly farm, we will be escorted along a path where many local species of butterflies can be seen. Then as we continue into the enclosure of landscaped tropical gardens, pools and a small waterfall, we will be introduced to many more species. It is here that we will be able to discover numerous rare and exotic butterflies fluttering freely around us. During our visit our knowledgeable guide will help us to identify the various species and point out mating and courtship displays. We will also be invited to witness the various stages of the butterfly’s life cycle, from caterpillars to chrysalises.

Unlike most other exhibitions, we will also have the opportunity to handle these fragile creatures and the caterpillars – a wonderful photo opportunity. After our guided tour, we shall have some free time to enjoy a complimentary drink whilst re-visiting the gardens or perhaps we might like to visit the souvenir shop in search of that special gift.

Following our free time, we shall return to our awaiting coach to continue with our tour of the island. As our coach climbs the hill, we will pass by Orient Beach, perhaps one of the most popular beaches in the Caribbean, before continuing past Grand Case, through La Savanne and finally arriving at the quaint French Capital of Marigot.

At Marigot, a stop will be made for us to purchase food and crafts at the colourful open-air market, browse in the local shops and boutiques, sip a refreshing drink in one of the many sidewalk cafes (not included in the price of this tour) or wander along the picturesque waterfront.

Our return to Philipsburg will be via Cole Bay, where there is a magnificent view of the Simpson Bay Lagoon, parts of the French side, and neighbouring islands, which we may like to capture on film. In Philipsburg we have the option of returning directly to our awaiting ship, or spending some time in town.

TOUR NOTES: Please note that we may have to walk for approximately ten minutes in order to reach the tour buses. We will spend approximately 45 minutes at the butterfly farm, most of the time, here, will either be spent walking or standing around the enclosure. The terrain here will mostly be flat and sandy, however there may be some steps to negotiate. Our time at Marigot will be our own, therefore walking will be at our own discretion.
