Rouen is a city which has stirred the souls of many great writers and inspired numerous painters in the past. Situated on the north bank of the River Seine, Rouen is considered to be the historical capital of Normandy.

Upon our arrival in the historic centre, we commence our walking tour along the narrow streets lined with more than 700 timber-framed houses, large and small, which are all characteristic examples of medieval building techniques. We will walk down Rue Saint-Romain, one of the town’s most fascinating streets with the beautiful St-Maclou Church of gothic-flamboyant style. We will also walk along the bustling and popular Rue du Gros-Horloge, which features a unique medieval defensive clock tower, and a nearby law court situated in an outstanding renaissance building.

Next we have the opportunity for an inside visit of the Notre-Dame Cathedral of Rouen, which is considered to be one of the finest achievements of French gothic art. The attraction of Rouen Cathedral lies in its infinite variety, including an immense façade bristling with openwork pinnacles and framed by two totally different towers – Tour Saint Romain and Tour de Beurre. The cathedral contains the tomb of the heart of Richard the Lionheart, who loved Rouen and ordered that his heart be buried here.

Prior to returning to the quayside, we will be given some free time at the Place du Vieux Marché, the old market square where Joan of Arc was burned at the stake in 1431.

TOUR NOTES: There is approximately two hours of walking involved in this tour, most of which is over cobbled ground, plus a few steps to negotiate. There is approximately one hour of free time, where walking is at the discretion of the individual.
