Departing from the pier, a short drive north takes us to the ancient Royal Burgh of Tain for a tour of the Glenmorangie Distillery. Glenmorangie in Gaelic means ‘glen of tranquillity’ – an appropriate description for its quiet and scenic location. Here we will be shown a demonstration of the traditional skills before enjoying a ‘wee dram’ of the fine whisky produced. Rejoining our coach, we will then cross the Dornoch Firth to the 12th century town of Dornoch, which was the location of singer Madonna’s wedding and is renowned for its golf course – reputedly the most northerly first class course in the world. This sleepy little town has a wealth of history, including a period of ‘witch burning’. This sinister practice carried on well into the 18th century, and the last known case was that of an unfortunate old woman, who locals accused of turning her daughter into a pony and riding her around town! She met her grisly end in a barrel of boiling tar, and the witches stone located just off the town square commemorates this event. During our guided visit to Dornoch we shall have a look at the impressive cathedral dating back to 1224. We return to Invergordon and our awaiting ship.
Please note that there are steep steps in the distillery, and the floors have open gratings (no high-heeled shoes should be worn). Approximately two hours of walking or standing will be encountered on this tour. For reference, the tour buses may not have air conditioning or toilets.
