Departing the quayside, we can enjoy a panoramic tour of Ferrol before continuing to Betanzos. The Roman town (Brigantium Flavium) emerged from old castors and gave birth to the present Betanzos. King Alfonso IX granted it the same law-code as La Coruña, and so a new era of prosperity began. However the mighty Andrade family and other noblemen were the protagonists of its medieval history. This explains the place-name of Betanzos de los Caballeros (‘of the Knights’). Nobility and bourgeoisie attracted the Franciscans, whose church is a masterpiece of the Galician art.
Following our walking tour of Betanzos, we will stop for typical Spanish appetisers in a local hotel, prior to returning to the quayside.
TOUR NOTES: This tour involves approximately one and a quarter hours of walking, some of which will be uphill and over cobbled terrain. There are a few steps to negotiate at the hotel. For reference, toilet facilities are available at the hotel. Due to private and religious functions, we cannot guarantee an inside visit of the church.
