ALEXANDRIA, EGYPT

Upon our arrival, we shall proceed to the El Alamein War Museum, located on the western side of town. The museum contains a collection of uniforms, memorabilia and pictorial material relating to the battle of El Alamein and the North African campaigns.

Departing from Alexandria port, we shall begin our approximate 1 ½ hour coach journey to the small coastal village of El Alamein, most famous as the scene of a decisive allied victory over the Axis power during World War II. Upon our arrival, we shall proceed to the El Alamein War Museum, located on the western side of town. The museum contains a collection of uniforms, memorabilia and pictorial material relating to the battle of El Alamein and the North African campaigns. There is also a diorama display, which in conjunction with a short tape, illustrates the main paths of advance and retreat until the Axis forces surrendered to the Allies in Tunis, 1943. Outside of the Museum we shall discover a collection of tanks, artillery and hardware from the battlefield. Our tour will then continue onto the Commonwealth War Cemetery. Here we shall find more than 7,000 tombstones covering the slopes, which overlook the desert battlefield of El Alamein. Soldiers from the UK, Australia, New Zealand, France and India – who fought and died for the Allied cause – are all buried here. Outside of the cemetery is a small separate memorial to the Australian contingent and located a little further east is a Greek War Memorial.Following our visit to the Commonwealth War Cemetery, we shall rejoin our coach for our return journey back to our awaiting ship in Alexandria. Please note that this tour involves a moderate amount of walking and may be over uneven ground. Steps may also be encountered. A bottle of Mineral water will be available during our coach journey and a light snack will also be provided during our tour (this will typically consist of a soft drink, crisps and cookies).
