TANGIER, MOROCCO

Explore Tangier, the real gateway to Morocco, guarded by the Cape Spartel lighthouse.

Tangier is the real gateway to Morocco, built on the edge of a remarkable bay. Dating back to around 1,000 BC, it is Morocco’s oldest continually populated city, and is a winter coastal resort of great renown. Tangier is where, in the unmistakably African streets, many cultures continue to mix but never completely blend.

Departing the quayside, we drive through the main boulevards of Tangier and the Place de France, before following the mountain road, lined with magnificent villages and lovely gardens We then arrive at the Cape Spartel Lighthouse, which is more than a century old and shines a warning beacon to ships sailing between the Atlantic and Mediterranean. Following a photo stop here, we shall make a stop for a refreshing soft drink before driving back to Tangier.

Tangier’s Mdina (old town) follows the ancient Roman city plan: the Mdina wall marks the line of the Roman defences, the grand Mosque rises on the foundations of a temple to Neptune, and the Petit Socco covers the area of what used to be the Forum. The bustling Kasbah is situated on the highest part of the Mdina in an area that has been the preserve of palaces and castles for thousands of years. Roman governors, Byzantine counts, Arab princes and Portuguese crusaders all succeeded in possessing the citadel. When they left Tangier in 1685, the English destroyed the existing ancient medieval fortress with fire, gunpowder and pickaxe. What we see today was largely built by Sultan Moulay Ishmael and his Pasha. Our guide will walk us through the Mdina and the Kasbah, and we will have the opportunity to view the fruit and vegetable market and Mendoubia Park. Following our visit, we make the return journey to the quayside and our awaiting ship.

TOUR NOTES: This is a strenuous tour, which involves approximately one and a half hours of walking, mainly over uneven ground, and there are some steps to negotiate during our walk through the Kasbah. Please note that the walk through the Kasbah can be a strenuous and crowded experience, and passengers will be hassled by shopkeepers hassling them to purchase their wares. A certain pace is required in order to get full enjoyment from this tour. Unfortunately it is not suitable for passengers with limited mobility or wheelchair users. Passengers are advised to wear flat, comfortable walking shoes; a bottle of water is also recommended. For reference, there is a walk of approximately 200-300 metres from the ship to the tour vehicles. Places of interest may be visited in a different order to that described.
