PORT OF SPAIN, TRINIDAD
The Monastery was originally founded by the Brazilian monk as a refuge for monks and others suffering religious persecution. Here our guide will provide a cultural and historical perspective on the monks that have lived the contemplative life for decades.
Take in the highlights of Port of Spain and experience the serenity of Mount St Benedict’s Monastery, known as The Abbey of Our Lady of Exile. Leaving the pier, we pass the striking Parliament building (known as the Red House), as well as the ‘Magnificent Seven’ – a row of imposing colonial houses originally built at the turn of the last century as private residences. Continuing around the Queen’s Park Savannah, we will make a brief stop at the tropical Botanical Gardens, a cool, shady enclave of exotic trees and tropical flowers. Now it is a short drive to Lady Young Lookout, for an excellent panoramic view of Port of Spain before departing to the edge of Trinidad’s rainforest, and ascending to the monastery, which nestles peacefully in the mountains.
