CASABLANCA, MOROCCO

Departing the ship, we first drive to the colourful central market, before continuing to Mohammed V Square, the heart of the modern city, where all of the city’s thoroughfares meet.

From here, we then travel to the Hassan II Mosque. The mosque is a masterpiece of Moroccan architecture and craftsmanship, and is the largest mosque in the world outside of Mecca. At 869 feet, its minaret is the tallest structure in Morocco and the tallest minaret in the world. We will make an inside visit here, where we can see the prayer hall that can accommodate more than 25,000 people, with the esplanade accommodating a further 80,000. The roof of the prayer hall is retractable and can be transformed into a magnificent patio in just a matter of minutes.

Continuing our tour with a drive through the corniche, along the Atlantic coast, we then arrive at the seaside resort of Ain Diab, where we shall stop for refreshments. Proceeding through the finest residential district of Anfa, our next visit is to the Catholic Cathedral of Notre Dame de Lourdes. From here we will go to the Habbous Quarter to enjoy a walking tour, taking in the outside of the King’s Palace and an internal visit of the Traditional Court Palace.

Time permitting, the last part of our tour takes us to the busy United Nations Square for some shopping, before we return to our ship.

TOUR NOTES: This tour involves approximately one and a quarter to one and a half hours of walking, over uneven ground. There are several deep marble steps (approximately 60) to negotiate in the mosque (please note there is not a handrail here) and also a few steps to encounter at the market, Ain Diab, the cathedral of Notre Dame de Lourdes and in the Habbous Quarter. Passengers can remain on the coach at any of the stops if they wish. Please note that we may not be able to make an inside visit of the mosque during religious services. If we do go inside, shoulders and knees should be covered, and we will be required to remove our shoes. Should our visit fall on a Saturday or Sunday, we will make an external visit to the Traditional Court Palace only. Toilet facilities are available at the Hassan II Mosque and at Ain Diab.
