PORT OF SPAIN, TRINIDAD
The Caroni Nature Sanctuary is a mangrove swamp covering an area of 105 square kilometres (40 square miles) on Trinidad’s northwest coast.
After an approximate 30 minute drive from Port of Spain, we board a large, flat-bottomed boat and slowly travel along the beautiful, peaceful waterways and lagoons, admiring the landscape and variety of birds and wildlife. The most wonderful of these birds is the scarlet ibis – a large, bright red species which feeds and nests here. This tour is world-renowned among ornithologists, as it offers the observer a chance to spot this rare, protected bird.
After our relaxing boat ride, having enjoyed the almost surreal beauty of this sanctuary, we return to the main landing and make our way back to Port of Spain.
TOUR NOTES: All creatures in their natural environment are unpredictable; therefore we are unable to guarantee sightings. Binoculars will certainly add to our enjoyment. The boat used – which is boarded from a pier – is not covered, therefore good sun protection is required, and it may be worth coming prepared for a tropical shower. Insect repellent is advisable. Please note that taxis are sometimes used for transportation. Our driver will also act as our guide, although we will have a separate guide on the boat. Not all vehicles are equipped with a PA system. Please note that it is not possible to visit the visitor centre, due to essential repairs taking place, should this conclude before the end of the season our guide will do their best to include a visit here.
