HORTA, AZORES
Discover the immense Capelinhos Volcano.
Departing the quayside, we drive to the belvedere at Espalamaca, from where there is a superb outlook towards the port and the charming old town of Horta. We will have the opportunity to see the islands of Pico, São Jorge and Graciosa, which form part of the Central Group.
We will drive up 3,000 feet to the centre of the island to view a vast volcanic crater known as Caldeira, which is over a mile in diameter and 1,200 feet deep, and surrounded by luxuriant vegetation. Continuing westwards, we pass the typical Azorean villages of Ribeira Funda, Praia do Norte and Norte Pequeno, from where there is a magnificent view of Capelinhos, the volcano that rose from the sea in 1957. The volcano is now extinct, but we can still see the effects of the devastating eruption that took place more than 50 years ago. Our tour returns along the south coast of this hydrangea-filled, windmill-dotted island, through Capelo (where we shall make a comfort stop) and Castelo Branco, on our way back to our awaiting ship.
TOUR NOTES - This is primarily a coach tour, which includes a minimal amount of walking. There is approximately 10 minutes of walking at Capelinhos over uneven terrain, although passengers can remain on the coach if they wish. Please note that toilet facilities are only available at Parque do Capelo.
