NOUMEA, NEW CALEDONIA
Travelling with our guide, we will make our way through the city centre where we will be able to view various landmarks and observe the blend of typically French architecture and South Pacific lifestyle.
Once we have arrived at the Parc Forestier – overlooking the city of Noumea – we will be at an elevation of 548 feet. The park covers 85 acres of which 20 acres are open to visitors, including five acres of ponds and lakes, home to a large variety of wild and domestic birds.
In the company of our guide we will set off for an easy paced walk along level walkways through the very peaceful sanctuary offering a natural look at the flora, together with the animal and bird life of the South Pacific. Amongst the many species we may see is the Cagou, a flightless bird that is the symbol of New Caledonia, with a call often mistaken for that of a barking dog.
Refreshments will be served at the gardens before we make our way back to our awaiting ship. En route we will be shown residential and commercial properties in the city and take in views of the nickel smelter – an industry often called the backbone of the New Caledonian economy.
