Departing from the landing stage in Leknes, we pass through this administrative centre of Vestvågøy Island ¬– skirting its little airport. All the while we have the Himmeltindan Mountains in our view, the tallest on the island at approximately 1,000 metres (3,000 feet) above sea level. We stop at Borg to visit the important archaeological find that was made here by a farmer in the early 1980’s. While ploughing his land, he discovered an ancient Viking farm, proving that the Lofoten Islands formed a centre of power during this great era. The homestead has been reconstructed, and we will find various exhibitions which will enable us to gain a realistic impression of its inhabitants’ living conditions. Briefly stopping en route to admire a picturesque, ‘dragon style’ wooden church at Buksnes, our tour continues on to the charming village of Ballstad. This is one of the Lofoten Islands’ most important fishing ports, located at the foot of the impressive Skottind Peak. Here we will have time for a stroll. Enlightened and invigorated, we return to the landing stage in Leknes via the same route.
There is a moderate amount of walking during this tour, at the Viking centre and at Buksnes Church. There are several steps inside the museum, and six or seven steps to enter the church. This tour is not recommended for passengers with limited mobility, or wheelchair users. Refreshments are not included but may be purchased at the Viking Centre if you wish.
