MONTEGO BAY, JAMAICA
Departing from the quayside, our tour vehicle will travel towards Reading and up the ‘Long Hill’ before passing through the rural villages of Anchovy, Montpelier, Ramble and Haddo.
Upon reaching the south coast, our tour will takes us through the Blue Fields with its beautiful stretch of white sand beach, just east of the old town on the Black River. At the border of the parishes of Westmoreland and St Elizabeth, we will see local fishermen and women preparing and selling fishes along with a popular Jamaican staple called ‘Bammy’, which is made from cassava.
Our scenic tour proceeds into the countryside, until we reach the Black River. Here we will board a boat for a short safari along the river, taking us through Jamaica’s largest wetland area – the Black River lower morass, which is home to over 100 species of bird; with luck we should be able to see a number of them!
There will be a running commentary from our English-speaking guide on the history and ecology of the area. Endangered American crocodiles are often sighted here, so we should keep an eye out!
Following our river cruise we shall proceed to the crocodile nursery which houses sub-adult crocs; from hatchling stage to four and five year olds. During our tour a handler will feed the small crocodiles whilst fascinating us with information about these interesting creatures. We will also be able to see an exhibition of crocodile paraphernalia featuring all aspects of crocodile life – included are displays of marine turtles, the West Indian manatees and the Jamaican Hutia.
En route back to our awaiting ship, we shall stop for lunch at Bluefields Bay.
TOUR NOTES: Please note that our journey from Montego Bay to the Black River will take approximately one hour and 40 minutes each way. There will be some walking involved in this tour and uneven ground and steps will be encountered. Unfortunately this tour is not recommended to passengers with limited mobility. Some of the roads we will travel along are likely to be rather bumpy. Binoculars will certainly add to your enjoyment of this tour. For your reference, the crocodile nursery is a captive environment. Unfortunately we are unable to guarantee what flora or fauna might be seen during this tour. A non-alcoholic drink will be included with lunch.
