From the port of Piraeus we pass the charming yacht harbour of Zea, with visible foundations from the 5th century. Next is the attractive Mikrolimanon’s waterfront lined with inviting al fresco fish restaurants. It is a short drive into cosmopolitan Athens. Here in the midst of modern structures, great monuments still stand. From the ancient city there is the Temple of Zeus, the Panatheniac Stadium and the Agora. We will pass by Omonia Square, Athinas Street, the open market, Monastiraki Square and Hermes Street – all in the old city. The neo-classical city includes the House of Parliament, Constitution Square, the Monument of the Unknown Soldier, the National Academy, Library, University and the Presidential Megaron. We will also make a short photo stop at the Panathenaic Stadium. Arriving at the Acropolis, there is a breathtaking view of antiquity as we look upwards towards the marvellous structure of the Parthenon. Together with our guide we will climb the pathway (including steps) which lead through to the massive Popylaea, on to the rock of the Acropolis itself. We view the Parthenon, the Temple of the Wingless Victory, and the Erectheion, with the whole city of Athens at our feet. The small museum at the top of the Acropolis houses a variety of sculptural works of art from the site. There may be some free time in the old city before we return to the pier.
This tour involves a moderate amount of walking, most of which is uphill and can be steep at points; approximately 140 steps will be encountered; comfortable, non-slip shoes are recommended. Passengers may stay near the bottom of the hill during the visit to the acropolis. Large bags are not permitted at the Acropolis. Please allow for possible extra time on this tour, as traffic in Athens can be heavy. Flash photography is prohibited in the museum.
