Contrasting dramatically with the arid, volcanic inland mountains, the shoreline is composed of sand dunes and salt pans, making it the leading wetland of Almeria Province, and give a unique spectacle of light and forms above and below the water. After driving through the Natural Park we will take the direction of Almeria. Almeria has tree-lined boulevards and gardened squares. Its dazzling white houses give it a Moroccan flavour. Its core still consists of distinctly Mudéjar flat-roofed houses in a maze of narrow, winding alleys, though now framed by modern apartment blocks. We will leave the quayside for a walk though the centre of the town to visit the Cathedral Fortress, which dates from the 16th and 17th centuries and was built in this form as a defence against the raids of the barbaric pirates. Its buttressed towers give it the look of a castle. The overall design is Gothic, with some classical touches around the doors. After our visit, we will proceed to a small “tapas” bar where we will be treated to a glass of wine and a typical “tapa” (small appetiser) before we make our way back to the pier and our awaiting ship. Please be aware that this tour includes approximately 2 hours of walking in Almeria city which will include cobblestones. Therefore this tour is not suitable for the less mobile or wheelchair uses.
