TALLINN, ESTONIA
Departing from the pier, we drive through the busy centre of Tallinn with its shopping malls, concert halls and theatres and we shall soon see the impressive sight of the Tall Hermann Tower - the highest medieval tower in Tallinn.
Leaving our coach on the bank of an old moat, we will get a breath taking view of the 15th century Castle built by the Teutonic order. As soon as we enter through the gate of the city wall we will find ourselves in a mysterious and fascinating kingdom of medieval Tallinn with narrow, cobblestone streets, secret courtyards and fairy tale turrets.
Tallinn is unique among other old European towns - its city wall has 26 towers still intact. On our tour we will climb two of them – Nun’s Tower and Golden Leg Tower. After this exciting adventure we will walk to the historic city centre. Here we can see the highlights of Old Tallinn - medieval guild houses, the Gothic Town Hall and the 15th century Pharmacy (outside views only).
Close to the Town Hall Square we will then board the small land train that will take us through the Old Town of Tallinn. This fascinating ride will take approximately 20 minutes. In the centre of the Old Town there is a small Marzipan Museum as Tallinn is considered (together with Lübeck, in Germany) a place where marzipan was first made. Here we can see fancy figures made entirely from marzipan and painted with food colouring. Children are offered a sample of the marzipan with a glass of lemonade here. It is also possible to buy the marzipan figures.
Restored with new energy, we will now visit the very centre of Old Tallinn – the Town Hall Square and the St Catherine’s Arts and Crafts Market for souvenir shopping or just strolling around, before boarding our coach to return to our awaiting ship.
TOUR NOTES: This family friendly tour includes a moderate amount of walking, over some cobblestone streets and many steps are encountered as we climb the towers. Toilet facilities are available at the Marzipan Museum and the Market. The Marzipan Museum accepts Estonian Kroons and credit cards for purchases, and Kroons, Euros and US Dollars are generally accepted at the Market.
