CATANIA, SICILY
Catania, Sicily’s second largest city, sits at the foot of Mount Etna, Europe’s largest active volcano.
On our tour today we will discover this splendid Baroque city, which was re-built following the earthquake of 1693. A short drive will take us from our ship through the busy port of Catania, passing the Fontana di Proserpina, Corso Italia, Piazza Verga, Villa Bellini, Piazza Stesicoro with its Vincenzo Bellini Monument, and finally the remains of the Roman Amphitheatre.
Next we commence our walking tour through the main part of the city. Some of the sights we will see include the inside of the Baroque Cathedral with St. Agatha’s Chapel, the Fontana dell’Elefante, which was built by using some ancient decorative elements such as the lavic elephant and the obelisk. We will then walk along one of the most charming streets in Catania, Via Crociferi, with its wonderful churches looking out onto the street, and Piazza Università. It may be possible for us to visit the colourful fish market.
Following our walking tour, we can enjoy a tasting session of local wine with cheese and fruit. Then we will have free time to explore the sights independently before re-boarding our tour coach for the journey back to the quayside.
TOUR NOTES: This tour involves approximately an hour and a half of compulsory walking, and around four steps to negotiate at the Cathedral. There is approximately 45 minutes of free time, where the amount of walking is at the discretion of the individual. Please note that should our call fall on a Sunday, the fish market will be closed.
