CADIZ, SPAIN
Enjoy the historic town of Jerez de la Frontera, in Cadiz – gateway to the new world.
Since the discovery of America, Cadiz has been a gateway to the New World and a bridge between Europe and Africa. The city, which is considered to be Spain’s oldest town, is African in appearance and immensely intriguing – a cluster of narrow streets opening onto charming small squares.
Following a brief panoramic drive, we proceed inland to the historic town of Jerez de la Frontera, which boasts a strong Moorish influence in its architecture, and is the sherry capital of the world. In a warm, dry microclimate away from the marine environment of Cadiz, the uniquely sweet sherry grapes grow well.
Upon arrival, we will enjoy a short scenic walk from the historical city centre of Jerez to the González Byass Wine Cellar, passing the Alcazar and the Cathedral. Founded in 1835 by a partnership between Spanish Manuel Maria González Angel and his British agent Robert Blake Byass, González Byass is one of the ‘classic bodegas’ of the sherry triangle. The winery itself is still family owned, and boasts vineyards in the best parcels of Jerez – Macharnudo, Carrascal and Burujena. The sherries produced at González Byass include Finos, Manzanillas, Olorosos, Amontillados and Pedro Ximénez styles. Here the age-old process of blending will be explained to us, and at the end of our visit, we shall be invited to sample the various types of local wine and tapas in the unique atmosphere of these wine cellars, before returning to the quayside.
TOUR NOTES: This tour involves a total of approximately one and a half hours of walking, some of which will be over cobbled ground, and there are a few steps to negotiate at the wine cellar. Unfortunately this tour is not suitable for wheelchair users.
