ST JOHNS, ANTIGUA

Welcome to the world famous Nelson’s Dockyard, once the naval base of the English fleet in the Caribbean. This remarkable area is located within English Harbour, one of the most beautiful natural harbours you may ever see. Made popular by the great Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson, who was stationed there during the mid-17th century, it is the only remaining Georgian naval shipyard in operation. Now, refurbished as a colonial village, it is a wonderful mixture of period English architecture & Caribbean-style elegance.

We can discover our own treasures by exploring the interesting shop and old buildings dotted around the harbour. We can visit the museum to learn of the past and recent history.

We will be given a guided tour of the area where we will hear of the life and times of the men stationed at the dockyard. There is also an option to join a short hike to Fort Berkley for a unique and spectacular view of the surrounding landscape. After working up an appetite we will make our way over to a local restaurant, where we will dine under the warmth of the island sun. Be inspired by a view of calm harbour waters while we enjoy a delicious lunch.

Time ticks a bit slower here so there is no rush, just blissful relaxation.

Following lunch and a short drive we will visit Shirley’s Heights Lookout Fort for a wonderful aerial view of Nelson’s Dockyard and the island’s south coast. We shall then re-board our coach and absorb more of Antigua’s tropical landscape on our drive back to the port.

TOUR NOTES: Please note that our time at Nelson’s Dockyard will be free time, therefore the amount of walking undertaken is at the individuals discretion. The streets are cobbled and paved and there are approximately four steps to encounter at the restaurant and four steps at Shirley’s Heights.
