CANO ARAGUAO, VENEZUELA

Boarding small, rustic boats (equipped with outboard motors, with capacities ranging from 6 to 15 passengers), we shall ride in the small channels of the Orinoco River delta

Boarding small, rustic boats (equipped with outboard motors, with capacities ranging from 6 to 15 passengers), we shall ride in the small channels of the Orinoco River delta. We take our time in order to observe flora and fauna along the banks. We may be lucky enough to see herons, blue jays, toucans and monkeys, possibly even river otters and crocodiles.Arriving at the Araguao community, we will have a short explanation of the Warao culture – Waraos are the predominant ethnic Indian group of the delta area. We will learn something of their customs, and locals will show us how they make their handicrafts, hats and baskets (these can be purchased). There will be a show of songs and dances performed by Waraos dressed in their typical wear. Refreshments and snacks are served. After this unique experience, we return to our ship via a slightly faster route.A degree of mobility is required in order to get on to and off the small boats, which are boarded by gangplank (unfortunately there is no space for wheelchairs). The boats, which are not covered, do not have a guide onboard, only a driver, and they are not equipped with toilet facilities. Toilets at the Warao community – where we shall spend approximately 1 ½ hours – will be basic. We recommend that you wear practical walking shoes, and clothing suitable for hot and humid conditions. Do not forget your sun protection and insect repellent. We cannot guarantee what flora and fauna may be seen; binoculars may aid you. The Waraos will accept US Dollars, but we recommend you take small bills, as change is unlikely; credit cards are not accepted. We shall spend around 2 hours cruising at the start of the tour, and 1 ½ hours to return to our ship. It is strongly advised that you wear your life jacket throughout the boat journey.
