For rum lovers this tour is a must! We will have the opportunity to feel the real spirit and culture of St Lucia, as well as having some fun in the process! In the early 1950s, bananas replaced St Lucia’s main crop of sugar cane. Perhaps because of this, St Lucia Distillers, situated in the heart of a banana plantation, is the sole remaining distillery on the island, functioning with imported molasses. During this tour we will learn all about rum production, and view the process in close detail. The trade name of the most popular rum produced here is ‘Bounty Rum’, known as the ‘Spirit of St Lucia’. We start in the distillery, where we will be able to look around the working areas, see and smell the raw materials and the spirit as it comes off the still. Outside, to give an insight into village life in St Lucia, a portion of a traditional village street scene has been recreated. As the rum reaches it’s next stage of ageing, blending and bottling, we move on to experience a different kind of ‘Lucian Spirit’ – an authentic, colourful carnival atmosphere. With the pulsating rhythm of Caribbean music permeating the air, a winding in our waist and a tapping in our feet, we twist our way to the riotous Rhythm Bar, for a chance to sample the end product. Perhaps we’ll purchase some to take home at the Rhum Shop. After leaving the distillery, we will stop for photos at Marigot Bay – a lovely natural double bay, used in the film Dr Doolittle. This tour involves walking around the distillery (where there are approximately 30 steps up to the viewing area over the huge boilers). We do not recommend participation by children.
