This is a wonderful way to enjoy the magnificent scenery that St Lucia has to offer, for those of us with a taste for soft adventure. Travelling by bus from Castries, we will head for the island’s south-eastern side. En route we can see Morne Fortune, dotted with historical remnants that are evidence of this site’s important military role. Passing through the centre of the island, we will traverse the cool mountain ranges, which are covered with the Barre de L’Isle rainforest. We shall drive through the shadows of great trees, and have a chance to admire the foliage of the arboraceous ferns lit up by the tropical sunshine.Upon arrival at the entrance to the Mandele Nature Reserve, we will be introduced to our experienced tour guide, who will help us to discover the east coast’s longest nature trail which traverses open grassland, xerophytic (dry) forest and stony beaches – it covers approximately five-and-a-half kilometres (three-and-a-half miles). During our trek, we may see some of the 38 species of birds that live here, we may even be lucky enough to spot the world’s smallest non-poisonous snake – the Leptotyphlaps Bilineata. We will also witness how the furious Atlantic has sculpted various fascinating geological features. After an exhilarating hour or so, we reboard the bus for the journey to a local inn, where we will be served a Creole lunch.Feeling refreshed we travel to Savannes Bay, to pick up our kayaks for a leisurely paddle on this calm and shallow bay, along the mangrove forests, passing scenic Scorpion Islet to arrive at secluded Honeymoon Cove. Here we can swim, kayak or simply relax amid superb surroundings. All too soon it is time to return to our waiting bus at Savannes Bay, to travel back to our ship. Please note that this tour is only for the very fit, and for those who can swim; a significant amount of walking is involved, covering uneven, hilly ground (upward and downward slopes). The exact distance covered on the trek can vary, but will be at least 1 ½ kilometres (1 mile). Participants should wear appropriate shoes (a change of footwear for the kayaking – shoes you don’t mind getting wet – would be advisable). We do not advise participation by children younger than 12 years of age. Don’t forget your sun protection and towel. Come already wearing your swimming costume under casual clothes. Insect repellent may prove handy. For reference, the kayaks are 2-seaters. You will be asked to sign an insurance waiver.
