Travelling westwards from Port Antonio, we’ll enjoy a scenic drive to Somerset Falls and the Daniels River Gorge. This river is a small independent stream, situated between the larger systems of the Rio Grande and the Swift River. Through a deep, forested gorge of natural rock, the Daniels River plunges in a series of cascades, green pools and waterfalls on its way to the Caribbean Sea. The area was occupied and used commercially by Spanish settlers over 400 years ago. Many original aqueducts and dams are still visible today. We will hear the history of this verdant place, and see numerous species of plants found only in these lush tropical forests. Afterwards, we can relax with a cool drink by the river, and local children may entertain us with Jamaican folklore. From Somerset Falls we drive to one of the most outstanding homes in the Caribbean – the Trident Castle, located at Peg Point, Port Antonio. Rising ever so imposingly from the waterfront, this audacious European-style Castle, in full white, framed by water and lush tropical foliage, with dramatic mountain vistas, is the last word in dream living.A winding willow tree-lined driveway, with guardhouse, takes us to the entrance steps – guarded by two life-sized crocodiles in water watching our every move! The classical interiors proportioned on a grand scale, has a wealth of architectural embellishments, mouldings and friezes, and expression of true luxury.Following our visit to Trident Castle we return to our ship. This tour involves approximately 1 hour of exploring the Somerset Falls, over an unmade path plus at least 50 steps, therefore it is unsuitable for passengers with limited mobility. Wear practical shoes. As you will be in a tropical forest, it is worth being prepared for rain. Bring sun protection and insect repellent.
