Leaving Montego Bay we head towards Reading, passing rural villages such as Anchovy, Ramble and Whithorn. We will have a great view of one of the island’s breathtaking lush plains – George’s Plain, a large expanse of flatland that can be seen for many miles around. Continuing downhill, we travel through Deans Valley to the south coast, where we’ll drive through Blue Fields with its beautiful stretch of white sandy beach, just east of the old town of Black River. Our scenic tour proceeds into the countryside, until we reach the Black River. Here we will board a boat for a short safari along the river, taking us through Jamaica’s largest wetland area – the Black River lower morass, home to over 100 species of birds; with luck we should be able to see a number of them. There will be a running commentary from our English-speaking guide on the history and ecology of the area. Endangered American crocodiles are often sighted here, so we should keep an eye out! Various species of bird as well as the endangered American crocodile inhabits the area and sightings are frequent. After our safari we shall stop at the Riverside Dock Restaurant, located along the river for lunch. After this interesting visit, we return to Montego Bay… There is some walking involved in this tour; uneven ground and several steps will be encountered. Not recommended for passengers with limited mobility. Some of the roads we will travel on are likely to be rather bumpy. Our journey to the Black river will take approximately 90 minutes in each direction. Binoculars may add to your enjoyment of this excursion. For reference, it is possible that the riverboat may not be covered.
