Samana Bay is a marine sanctuary where whales are protected by the Dominican government. Humpback whales have been wintering near Samana for centuries and thousands of these whales from the North Atlantic migrate to the warm waters of Dominican Republic each winter to mate and give birth.Departing from our ship we will sail across Samana Bay to enjoy Humpbacked Whales Love Games. Humpbacked Whales are commonly known for the males’ mysterious songs. These songs can run 7 to 15 minutes (sometimes longer) and contain verses, and our boat has underwater microphones installed so we can hear them. They were named ”humpback” because of the arc in their backs when diving. Humpback whales can be easily distinguished by their long pectoral fins (flippers), which also shows up in the skeleton. They are also distinguished by the conical head, which, too, shows up in the skeleton. We cannot guarantee the success rate of seeing the Whales, as these endangered creatures live in their natural free environment. Normal Whale Watching Season goes from the middle of January to the middle of March so we believe it should be possible to offer this tour, however this tour may be cancelled at short notice. The minimum distance for approaching these animals is 50 metres (165 feet) All activities are subject to sea and weather conditions. Please note that participating children must be 6 years of age or over. We don’t recommend this tour to wheelchair passengers. There is little shade on the boat.
