Los Haitises National Park is one of the most unique tours in the Caribbean…From Samana pier, we will board our speedboat where our guide will greet us. After a short safety briefing, we will set off across the turquoise bay for an ecological experience of a lifetime. Known for having one of the most important, lush rainforests and mangrove reserves in the entire Caribbean – Los Haitises national Park is an awe-inspiring sanctuary. We will circle the small cay known as Bird Island as our guide points out and explains the importance of many migratory and indigenous birds that inhabit the island. These birds reign over an abundance of untamed fauna, rich islands and mangroves. Our captain will dock our boat at an area of captivating caves. Here we will be transported back in time to experience the culture of a time rich in tradition and historical significance. In the caves our guide will provide fascinating information on the people that inhabited them and the islands of Los Haitises. Cave drawings representing the gods and the daily life of the Taino Indians, will give us a glimpse into the life of these ancient people. We will also see beautiful stalagmites and stalactites, which have formed over centuries. The majority of the tour is by boat. Once at the park there is approximately 50 feet (20 metres) of walking and there are approximately 8 rustic steps to encounter. You will enter the caves in the boat and then get off for a short walk to the paintings and sculptures. We recommend you wear trainers or shoes with a grip, as the paths can be slippery. Please note that there is little or no shade on the boats, therefore we recommend wearing tops with sleeves and a sunhat. Insect repellent and sun cream may prove to be a handy addition to your bag.
