BELIZE CITY, BELIZE

The Caves Branch River winds its way through the Maya Mountains and numerous caves once inhabited by people of this ancient civilisation.

The Caves Branch River winds its way through the Maya Mountains and numerous caves once inhabited by people of this ancient civilisation. Upon arrival at Jaguar Paw (about one-and-a-half hours’ drive from Belize City), we will start our approximate 45 minute hike down a jungle trail. Along the way, our knowledgeable guide will point out various plants, roots and herbs once used by the ancient Mayans for medicinal purposes. At the entrance tunnel that heads into the underground cave system, our eye-opening adventure begins! Equipped with a flashlight and an inflated inner tube, we will be ready to float away with the gentle currents. Around us, intricate crystalline formations line the cave walls, and the majestic rise and fall of stalagmites and stalactites add to the serene opulence of nature. On several occasions we will emerge into sunlight, only to enter another cave system. The cave tubing part of the tour will last approximately two hours, following which we will enjoy a light lunch. After lunch there may be time for some relaxation before we are transferred back to Belize City. Please note that this is an energetic tour, therefore it is unsuitable for passengers with limited mobility. Participating passengers must be able to swim (although life vests are worn). The depth of water, which is subject to seasonal variation, ranges from 3-6 metres (10-20 feet); there are some places that are less than 3 metres. We recommend that you come dressed in a swimming costume, T-shirt, shorts and shoes that you don’t mind getting wet. Bring a towel, a change of clothes and shoes, sun protection and insect repellent. All participants will be required to sign an insurance waiver. Children under 12 years of age are not permitted. Not recommended for passengers who suffer from claustrophobia.
