Departing from the quayside, we will travel by coach along the scenic Western Highway on route to Cayo District and the impressive Maya site of Xunantunich. Before reaching the entrance of this ancient city, we are hand-cranked across the Mopan River by a 19th century ferry! Xunantunich means, "stone woman" in Mayan and was once a thriving city near the end of the Classic Period (300-900 AD). The site has large plazas ringed with temples, the tallest is the 130 foot El Castillo (the castle), which is large by Mayan standards and is only exceeded by the Caana temple at Caracol! We will be able to climb to the top of El Castillo for panoramic vistas of the surrounding rainforests, as well as views of the bordering towns around Belize and Guatemala. The center of Xunantunich occupies an area less than a square mile and is composed of six major plazas surrounded by more than 25 temples and palaces. The large pyramid, El Castillo, is well known for the frieze of stucco decoration, which at one time extended around the entire temple. Following our guided tour, we will be invited to enjoy a typical Maya Cuisine lunch whilst listening to the relaxing melodies of the Marimba. Refreshed we shall return to our awaiting ship.
Please note that this tour will involve approximately 1 hour of walking over uneven and grassy terrain. There are approximately 100 steps to negotiate at the ruins. It is possible to climb the El Castillo pyramid, however this is optional. Sensible clothing and shoes are recommended. There are toilet facilities available at the ruins.
