The ancient San Gervasio Mayan ruins honour Ixchel, the goddess of fertility and good health. This holy area was a very important pilgrimage destination for Mayan women, and all Mayans were encouraged to visit this sacred place once in their lifetime. San Gervasio is a recently excavated site with interesting smaller-scale structures, occupying approximately 10 acres in the middle of the Cozumel jungle. We can view the ancient steam baths, the entrance arch and the central plaza where many rituals were performed – a great way to experience Mayan culture. Please note that San Gervasio does not compare to the size and detail of Chichen-Itza or Tulum, but it does provide an insight into Mayan culture and architecture. There is at least 1,000 metres (3,000 feet) of walking at the site, plus 10-20 steps or more (there is also around 400-800 metres to/from the tour transport). Uneven limestone and jungle paths will be encountered (extra caution should be taken so that you do not slip or fall); suitable footwear should be worn for exploring. Bring sun protection and insect repellent. There is a US$5-8 tax (depends on exchange rate and correct at time of printing) on the use of video cameras. No tripods or professional video cameras are allowed. Complimentary soft drinks are provided on the coach.
