This once-in-a-lifetime adventure allows us to go tubing on the largest and longest of Dominica’s 365 rivers – a thrilling experience! (For those novices amongst us, tubing is the use of inflated tyre inner tubes to travel down a waterway. These tyres even have a seat, and you will be given a paddle.) After an approximate 30 minute drive through the interior rainforest of the island, we will find ourselves in the perfect setting to launch ourselves on our breathtaking journey down the Layou River. After a short safety briefing, we will explore the Layou Gorge with its precipitous cliffs that overhang the river and unspoiled natural vegetation. We will enjoy the cool mountain breeze sweeping down the valley, gently rustling through the branches of the dominant trees in the area. The view of the vertical cliffs and the valley itself is captivating. On the all-too-soon return to our ship – after we’ve had a refreshing drink – we will pass the Dominica Coconut Product Factory in Belfast, where cosmetics, detergent and soaps are manufactured utilising local raw materials such as coconut, cocoa and hibiscus leaves. We will also glimpse the village of Mahaut, and the renowned village of Massacre – named after the massacre of the Carib Indians in 1674.Please note that this is an energetic, activity-based tour – it is unsuitable for passengers with limited mobility. Participants must be able to swim. Not for children under 6 years. We will spend between 45 minutes to 1 hour tubing down the river. For reference, the depth of water is approximately 2 metres (6 feet). We recommend that you come dressed in a swimming costume under casual clothes, with shoes that you don’t mind getting wet. Bring a towel, and a change of clothes and shoes; a waterproof camera would capture those magic moments. All equipment is provided (including life vests). It is advisable to leave valuables on the ship. The condition of the river will determine the operation of this tour.
