TOUR H - CARTAGENA BY LAND & SEA
Excursions
- £40-£50
- Approximately 4 hours
We will be invited to enjoy an approximate one hour cruise of Cartagena’s bay with our guide, who will bring to life the era of many great land and sea battles through amazing stories of glory and tragedy, all of which came to shape this city.
In order to resist the attacks during the 17th century, the Spanish Crown hired the services of prominent European Military engineers to carry out the construction of the defences, which are nowadays one of Cartagena’s distinguishing features. This project took 208 years and resulted in seven miles of walls surrounding the city, the San Felipe Fortress - with fortifications on every point and narrows - and the Fort of San Sebastian de Pastelillo in the neighbourhood of Manga.
Following our tour of the bay and the fortifications, we will have the opportunity to visit the Pierino Gallo Mall where we shall have approximately 25 minutes of free time. We might choose to perhaps shop for Colombia’s famous precious gem – the Emerald – or simply while away the time admiring the many local handicrafts and leather goods.
Following our free time, we shall proceed to the Fortress of San Felipe to get the defenders view of Cartagena in contrast to the perspective from the bay. We will have a guided visit to the fortress – the largest Spanish fort in the New World. This formidable castle defended the city from many attacks and it withstood the bloodiest assault from the British Admiral Vernon, who was unable to capture it.
