TOUR K - OCHO RIOS HIGHLIGHTS

    Excursions

    • 35-45
    • 3.5-4 hours

Our tour will begin with a meandering drive up to Fern Gully, where nature produces the most magnificent sight of fresh green trees approximately 5,000 feet above sea level. We will be able to feel the coolness that comes from this three-mile stretch of road, running south of the town on the original course of an old riverbed, canopied by tropical foliage and home to over 100 species of fern.

Following our visit to Fern Gully, we will be taken to Coyaba Gardens, where an experienced guide will take us through the gardens. The property is a museum and is housed in a Spanish-style building, complete with a cut stone courtyard and fountain surrounded by three acres of lush tropical foliage, traversed by a rushing mountain stream. The artefacts in the museum date from pre-Columbian times and trace the island’s history to the present day. We will be guided through the gardens, passing by the abundance of exotic flowers, shaded by giant cedars and Banyan trees. At the end of our guided tour we will have some free time to perhaps relax in the cool cut stone courtyard or we might prefer to visit the gift shop.

Our final stop will be at the world-renowned Dunn’s River Falls, which cascades over giant rocks shaped like steps. For those feeling adventurous it is possible to climb the falls, however there are also hanging balconies for those of us just wishing to take photographs of the falls.

TOUR NOTES: Please note that this tour does involve a moderate amount of walking and standing over varying terrains including pebbled pathways, wooden boardwalks and cobbled courtyards. There will also be steps to negotiate at each of the stops. We do not recommend this tour to passengers with limited mobility. There are also 200 steps at Dunn’s River Falls to negotiate, if passengers intend on making the climb to the top. Please be warned that it is both strenuous and slippery to climb the falls, but nevertheless it is a worthwhile and exhilarating experience. If passengers do decide to climb the falls, suitable shoes should be worn as well as a T-shirt and shorts over swimwear. Don’t forget your towel, adequate sun protection and insect repellent. The paths and balconies at Dunn’s River Falls may also be very slippery so please take extra care and caution when negotiating these.
