TOUR C - OLD CARTAGENA & FOLKLORIC SHOW

    Excursions

    • £40-£50
    • Approximately 4 hours
    • Minimum of 80, Maximum of 300

We shall be invited to enjoy a tour of the magnificent city of Cartagena de Indias, which includes a visit to the historic colonial city and a beautiful show of Colombian music and dance at the painstakingly restored Heredia Theatre.

Our tour begins with a panoramic view of the San Felipe de Barajas Fortress, situated outside the walled city. This monumental fort is considered to be the most outstanding feat of Spanish military engineering in the New World. Its construction began in 1536 and lasted for 121 years.

On entering the walled city we will make a brief stop for photographs at the San Francisco gun battery, before enjoying the opportunity to encounter the 16th century first hand with the city’s beautifully preserved colonial houses, churches, plazas and museums. As we are guided through the narrow streets overhung with flower-bedecked balconies, we will see the Plaza de Bolivar, where the Inquisition Palace, Cathedral and Gold Museum are located.

We will also make a visit to the San Pedro Claver Cloister and Monastery, built in homage to the Protector of the Slaves, and serves as a reminder of the turbulent past of Cartagena. From here we shall travel to the Heredia Theatre.

The ornate theatre was built in 1911 from the ruins of the old Mercy Church to commemorate the centenary of the independence of Colombia from Spain, and has been restored as a cultural centre for theatrical and musical performances. Upon our arrival we can enjoy a folk show of music and dance, which will be presented by local artists in the main auditorium.

Following our show we shall return to our awaiting ship, en route we will make a stop at Bocagrande, where we will be able to browse and shop for the world famous Colombian Emeralds.

TOUR NOTES: Please note that this tour will involve approximately one and a half hours of walking over mostly paved surfaces. There will also be approximately 20 steps to negotiate when entering the Heredia Theatre. Walking during our free time at Bocagrande will be at the individual’s discretion.
