A true feel of Mexico! Learn the history of a Spanish fort and plundering pirates who attacked the area; discover the culture and tradition of a sleepy Mexican town; hear information about Mayan history, culture and customs; enjoy lunch at a lakeside restaurant; and view the beautiful and remote Bacalar Lake. Our tour begins with a drive to the Spanish Fort of San Felipe, overlooking Bacalar waterfront, the local plaza and its lake known by the Mayans as ‘The Birthplace of the Rainbow’, due to its multiple shades of blue. Afterwards we will have approximately two hours in which to leisurely enjoy a Yucatan buffet-style lunch, relax on the shores of the lake and perhaps swim in the pristine waters. (Limited, non-motorised watersport equipment is provided, including snorkel gear; participation is at our own risk.)This tour involves walking while exploring the Fort of San Felipe; some rough, uneven ground and steps will be encountered, so wear comfortable shoes. Bring sun protection, swimwear and a towel; insect repellent may be advisable. There is a US $5-8 tax (depends on exchange rate and correct at time of printing) on the use of video cameras at the fort. No tripods or professional video cameras are allowed; photography is prohibited in the fort’s museum. Lunch may include seasoned chicken breast accompanied by purple onions, rice, red & green peppers, black beans, salsa, guacamole and a Mayan seasonal desert. (Content subject to change). There is a bar selling a range of refreshments. There is a drive of approximately 1 ½ hours in each direction, at the start and end of the tour; no comfort stops will be made.
