MONTEGO BAY, JAMAICA

In the air-conditioned lounge on the estate, we will see the extraction of cane juice as it was done in the 18th century, by the resident donkey. We will also tour the distillery and the Ageing House before having the opportunity to taste the rum (we may even be able to win a bottle of rum, if we can taste all 14!).

Our tour will depart Montego Bay, travelling towards Reading and up towards ‘Long Hill’. We will pass through rural villages such as Anchovy, Montpelier, Ramble, Haddo and Whithorn. We will also have great views of one of Jamaica’s lush, breath-taking plains – the George’s Plain – which is a large expanse of flatlands that can be seen for many miles. Continuing downhill and through Deans Valley onto the South Coast, we will pass the border of parishes Westmoreland and St Elizabeth, where local fishermen and women prepare and sell their catch of the day, along with a popular Jamaican staple called Bammy, which is made from Cassava.Continuing through Bamboo Avenue – a rather splendid sight – our tour will travel onto Middle Quarters, which is known as ‘Shrimp Country’ in the parish of St Elizabeth. We will pass by Maggoty, home to one of Jamaica’s Hydro dams, which generates electricity to a wide section of the parish before arriving at Appleton estate. There will also be a rum mixing session for those who wish to try their own special blend – Appleton Light, Medium or dark; a video presentation of the actual blending and mixing, which is done in Kingston, will be shown, and a complimentary bottle of Appleton Rum is available for every guest! Please note that there is a moderate amount of walking involved in this tour. Uneven grounds pebbles and several steps will be encountered. This tour is not recommended for passengers with limited mobility. Please note that many of the roads during our approximate 90 minute journey will be winding and bumpy.
