    Colon, Panama

A vibrant, pulsing and fascinating place, rich in culture.

At the Atlantic end of the Panama Canal, Colón was initially established as the terminus of the Panama Railroad, built to provide a fast overland route to California and the gold rush. The town was originally called Aspinwall – the promoter of the Railroad was William Aspinwall – but the local Hispanic population called it Colón after Christopher Columbus. Just outside are several reminders of Panama’s rich history, including the Canal’s impressive Gatún Locks and Gatún Dam. About half an hour away is the Fort San Lorenzo, built by Spain to guard the mouth of the strategically important Chagres River. The fort is a well-preserved reminder of when this was at the heart of the Spanish Main.
