    Mindelo, Cape Verde Islands

    Mindelo

An Old Portuguese port, with colonial buildings that betray the islands intriguing pedigree.

The Cape Verdes were a Portuguese colony and there are many traces of this colonial heritage in the towns and villages. Mindelo, on São Vicente island, is fringed by arid mountains and a deep-water port that has long been a stopping-off point for transatlantic ships. The former Capitania – where the harbour captain operated – is a replica of Lisbon’s Tower of Belém that has now been restored as a museum. The Municipal Market is interesting (especially the huge fish market) while the well-preserved Governor’s Palace and City Hall are both attractive examples of Portuguese-style buildings. There are some fine wide esplanades around the harbour and a stroll through the town is a great way to find interesting little cafés and tiny shops.
