It is as if time forgot this little village with its cobblestone streets, red-tiled white buildings dotting the hillside, Gothic church, Moorish gate and steep alleyways. Continuing from this quaint village, we proceed to the old Arab town of Arcos de la Frontera. Built in the form of an amphitheatre, it is considered to be one of the prettiest white villages and is nowadays a National Historic Monument. Perched atop a rock and embraced by the Guadalete River on three sides, Arcos de la Frontera boasts impressive white buildings of ancient mansions as well as humble abodes. Various architectural styles can be viewed, including Romanesque and Baroque displayed on façades and porticos of churches and chapels. Fine artistic coasts of arms, Moorish arches and sculptures are exhibited on mansions and along the streets. We stop at the beautiful Parador Casa del Corregidor – a restored palace in the heart of the old quarter – for refreshments. Built in the 1700’s, it was the palace and government seat of the King’s Magistrate in Arcos. This tour involves approximately 2 hours of walking, including steep uphill, cobblestreets and lots of steps in Arcos and Medina. We do not recommend this tour for passengers with limited mobility.
