Upon departing Ponta Delgada, we proceed to the seafront to one of the main pineapple plantations, where the system of cultivating and marketing this fruit will be explained. During our visit, we will be able to sample a pineapple liqueur. Continuing across the island in a north-easterly direction, we shall be able to see the most important agricultural areas of the north coast, before we reach the small town of Ribeira Grande. The island’s centuries old history and strong Portuguese flavour can be found in abundance here. From Ribeira Grande, we proceed along the north coast, passing en route Santa Iria Belvedere and the Tea Plantation at Gorreana, before arriving at the summit of Pico do Ferro Belvedere, which overlooks the magnificent Furnas Valley. Here we will have the opportunity to admire the wonderful view of the valley. Before lunch, which will be served at a local hotel, we shall have the opportunity to visit the unforgettable Terra Nostra Park, with its remarkable subtropical flora. After lunch we will visit the remarkable Hot Springs, which are natural sources of mineral and thermal waters. This is probably the most interesting natural phenomenon in the Azores – 23 mineral springs spewing forth hot waters in a sulphur-laden atmosphere. On our return to Ponta Delgada via the south road, we shall pass by Vila Franca do Campo, a picturesque village that at one time was the capital of the island.

This tour involves some walking at the pineapple plantation, plus 5 steps, approximately 10 minutes of walking over cobblestones in Ribeira Grande, a short walk over cobblestones at the Santa Iria Belvedere and a little walking at the viewpoint of Pico do Ferro. There will be around 800 metres (2,600 feet) of walking at Terra Nostra Park and 5 minutes over uneven ground at the Furnas Hot Springs. Unfortunately this tour is not suitable for wheelchair users. Passengers are advised to bring a jumper and/or raincoat with them on this tour.
