TOUR D - DELFT & HOLLAND IN MINIATURE

    Excursions

    • £40 - £50
    • 5 Hours
    • Approx. 2 hours of walking

Leaving the quayside we drive directly to Madurodam - Holland in Miniature - erected by Mr and Mrs Maduro in commemoration of their son. We will have free time here to wander among the exhibits. We shall see true copies of the country’s most impressive buildings on a scale of 1:25. Madurodam features more than 700 miniature buildings, windmills, bridges, trees, trains and so on – a fascinating visit!

We then travel to the historic city of Delft, famous for its Delft Blue pottery. Old shadowy canals, monuments and museums make Delft one of the most characteristic old Dutch cities. We will visit a Delft blue pottery workshop, to see how the famous Delft Blue pottery is made. Although it is not exactly clear when works began production of multicoloured (or polychrome) earthenware, factories appeared in Amsterdam, Haarlem and Middelburg during the second half of the 16th century and it was not until the end of the 16th century that the first pottery was made in Delft. From then on the number of factories increased, largely because tradesmen from the Dutch East India Company brought back Chinese porcelain from the East, and this type of porcelain – with its blue decorations on a white background – became very popular amongst the Dutch. Soon, Dutch potters started to imitate the technique.

After our tour of the pottery, we shall re-board our tour coach for the return journey to Ijmuiden.

TOUR NOTES: This tour involves walking of approximately one hour at Madurodam (during free time) and approximately one hour at Delft pottery. Cobblestone streets and steps are likely to be encountered. For reference, driving time to Madurodam and from Delft back to the ship takes approximately one hour.
