Year-round warmth: sunshine cruises in the Canary Islands

Scattered 70 miles off the coast of Africa, the Canary Islands combine European sophistication with a superb African climate. A cruise holiday to this part of the world, known for its year-round warmth, is perfect for sunbathers or those just wanting to relax in the sunshine, either during a day ashore or on the deck of your cruise ship. Alternatively you can swim, sail, snorkel or simply stroll your way around the magnificent islands of Gran Canaria, Tenerife, Lanzarote and La Gomera. Easily accessible from UK ports, our Canary Island cruises enable you to take in all these islands have to offer: from the dramatic scenery and volcanic mountains to the wide, sandy beaches. You can also opt to visit cruise destinations further afield, from Funchal in Madeira, Mindelo in the Cape Verde Islands to Dakar in Senegal and Casablanca in Morocco.

    • FUNCHAL - INFORMATION
    • Funchal, Madeira, Portugal
    • Henry the Navigator of Portugal, at the beginning of the 15th century, planned to extend his knowledge of the coast of West Africa. In pursuit of this objective, two young sea captains, Joãn Goncalves Zarco and Tristão Vaz Teixaira, were blown off course on their journey around the African coast. After many days at sea they found land on a small island that they called Porto Santo; the year was 1419. It was a year later that the next discovery was made. The captains had reported a possible island on the southern horizon. Approaching the island they were met by huge Atlantic rollers breaking along the north coast, and the boiling turbulence of the crosscurrents at the Ponto São Lourenço. However on rounding the headland they discovered the Bay of Machico, and the heavily forested island they called Madeira.

The currency of Madeira is the Euro.

    • MINDELO - INFORMATION
    • Mindelo, Cape Verde Islands, Cape Verde Islands
    • The Cape Verdes were a Portuguese colony and there are many traces of this colonial heritage in the towns and villages. Mindelo, on Sao Vincente Island, is fringed by arid mountains and a deep water port that has long been a stopping-off point for transatlantic ships.

The currency of Mindelo is the Cape Verdean Escudo

    • TENERIFE - INFORMATION
    • Sta Cruz de Tenerife, Spain
    • An extinct volcano, Mount Teide, dominates Tenerife’s mountainous landscape; at 3,718 metres (12,200 feet), it is the highest peak in Spain. The volcanic scenery of Tenerife is both enchanting and inspiring, and has been the setting of famous movies such as Planet of the Apes and One Million Years Before. Santa Cruz is the lively cosmopolitan capital of this, the largest of the Canary Islands. Throughout the city there is a variety of architectural and historical interests to suit all tastes.

The official currency of Tenerife is the Euro.

Taking a Canary Island cruise holiday, at any time of year, virtually guarantees warm weather.

    •      Average Temperature: 20-22°C
    •      Summer Highs: Mid 30s°C
    •      Average Winter Temperature: 18°C
    •      Average Summer Temperature: 24°C

With the northern shores of the Canary Islands being exposed to northwesterly winds they tend to be rather wetter than the sheltered southern coasts. On a cruise holiday in West Africa, you will enjoy a hotter and dryer climate in comparison to the dominant spring temperatures of the Canary Islands. Even on the hotter days on the beach it can be pleasantly cooler higher up, and during a winter cruise holiday some warm clothing is essential.
