The first thing we will notice about Skagen is the beautiful strong light which has attracted artists for more than 100 years. Then we will see the scenery – vast, untouched and varied, with woods, dunes and heaths, surrounded by the sea. Here the people live off the sea and in harmony with nature, in a clean and healthy environment. .
Leaving the pier we drive to the old quarters of the town and to Skagen Art Museum. We will see various works exhibited here – approximately 1,500 paintings, drawings, sculptures and handicrafts by artists working in Skagen between 1830 and 1930. Within the museum is also the Brøndum Dining Room, with paintings and portraits in the panelling, transferred from Brøndums Hotel in 1946. Many of the artworks reflect the period of naturalism in the last decades of the 19th century, when the artist colony in Skagen flourished. The museum is situated in a wonderful garden close to Brøndums Hotel, where many of the artists stayed.
By coach we then continue to ‘Grenen’, the headland where the Baltic and the North Seas meet. We are taken to the very tip in a tractor bus. On the tip we can stand with our feet in two different seas.
After an interesting few hours, we return to our ship.
TOUR NOTES: This tour involves a lot of walking and standing at Skagen Museum (some steps, grass and flagstones will be encountered).
